[2005 Austin City Limits taping]

Despite indie audiences’ perennially passionate possessiveness over little known artists, it’s an undeniably beautiful thing when local bands make it big. What Made Milwaukee Famous aren’t yet as famous as say, Spoon or even Okkervil River, but the Austin boys with a Wisconsin moniker are quickly becoming the talk of the town both here and beyond. New single and more after the jump. (more…)

In the spirit on shedding light on some of the more slept-on acts of the hip-hop world, BOJ traveled all the way to Sweden (not really) to bring you something special that may sound familiar to Texas heads. That screwed up hook we’re used to has made its way to Stockholm and to the studio of Adam Tensta, who raps in English but has his MySpace page in Swedish (don’t ask me). “Bangin on the System,” the first single from his album released last November It’s a Tensta Thing, has a street vibe that hits home in the States, even if we don’t realize Tensta is a Swedish project filled with immigrants (had to do some research for that nugget). As for the rest of the album, it may not be as recognizable for Yanks as the lead single (case in point”My Cool”), but is still a solid listen for those looking to expand their Hip-Hop horizons beyond the pond.

So Austin’s greatest week in music is getting closer every minute. Here at the Juice, we owe it to you to stay on our grind and start delivering the goods early. What better way to start than with buzzworthy indie favs Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward? The duo, collectively known as She & Him, will swing by The Parish in a few months, and while I wouldn’t expect any high-stakes break-dancing, mademoiselle Deschanel has some serious pipes. mp3 and more after the jump. One of last year’s most pleasant surprises was the sublime debut of California hip-hop act Blu & Exile, who’s Below the Heavens LP – with its introspective lyrics and 9th Wonder/DJ Premier-esque beats – was reminiscent of an It Was Written or Resurrection for the new millenium. Now Blu is back (it’s unclear whether Exile provided the production) with two new bangers. Act like you know.

Last year’s “it” producer returns in the ’08 with a new vid from his album, Version. “Just” is a Radiohead cover, but it’s been thoroughly Ronsonized. Check out the multiple Marks taking the place of various Dap Kings.

Danger Mouse and Cee-lo Green’s insane and genius alt-pop duo is back with a new single and a new album. The Odd Couple is slated for a mid-year release and the recently leaked, groovy single “Run” can be found here.

The ever-eclectic Danger Mouse has been broadening his horizons, producing the upcoming album from blues rockers The Black Keys; and Cee-lo has kept busy lending his talents to Aaron McGruder’s buzzed-about Adult Swim series, The Boondocks. If The Odd Couple shapes up to be anywhere near as good as St. Elsewhere, we’d be crazy not to be checking for it.

Pharoahe Monch gets Rawkus @ The Parish January 28, 2008

Monch is a soulful dude. Brooklyn’s hard-hitting veteran of the hip-hop underground and author of one of last year’s finest rap records, Desire, stopped by The Parish last night on a free promotional tour with Scion. Considering that the show didn’t cost anything, the fact that Monch was merely late and not an asshole was, in itself, something to be thankful for. While the not-quite-packed, but certainly full of energy, crowd waited for the star to appear on stage, DJ Eleven cued up the classics and a lengthy and surprisingly heated break-dancing battle broke out between several fly and restless B-Boys and B-Girls – one of whom may or may not have been a state championship dancer. Details, pics and vids after the jump.
