<< Natalia Ciolko starts your weekend off right >>

Real talk: I had to turn off my intelligent Erykah Badu on loop to play this awesomely misogynistic Hype Williams rap video. I chose this video today because, big surprise, I was getting nostalgic for my underage days.

On a hip-hop forum some of us O.J.’ers frequent, there was recently a conversation about the songs and albums that got us interested in the genre in the first place. This song tops my list. I distinctly remember jamming to this WITH MY MOM in the car, circa 7th grade. UGK shouting out ‘San Antone,’ was one of the coolest things ever and to me, Saytown-for-lifer, it still is.

If you can take the same song and play it at a junior high winter dance and then at a crazy-ass club and also at an ironic indie dance party and get the exact same reaction, you’ve got a solid hit.

Plus, I just went to the liquor store, I am on my way to New Orleans for the weekend and I can identify with a pimp. Still love you, Erykah! Happy Friday.

Our own Ms. Natalia Ciolko had nice convo with the “No one Ever Really Dies” crew before SXSW about their new album, giving back to the fans and music philosophy 101. The word of the day is: synesthesia.

Misfitz 1

Tal Bevins and Xzavier Leonard don’t want to work anymore. They aren’t lazy or looking for sympathy. They aren’t delusional or disgruntled, and they don’t want to build a cabin in the woods. Bevins, 24, better known as Tal-B, and “X,” 27, his partner in rhyme, are life-long rappers – born and bred in Austin, Texas. (more…)

Wale 1

Wale is a cool dude. The up-and-coming Nigerian-American rapper from D.C. came through the TX Garage party the last night of South By sharing a bill with Simian Mobile Disco, Flosstradamus and Spank Rock. The party was sweet, and the drinks were free and Wale breezed through some new songs and remixes with a casual charisma. (more…)

SXSW is the week that won’t quit. We’ve still got the goods, and we’re gonna keep giving ’till they’re gone. The My Morning Jacket show was epic. Jim James performs like he’s in some heavenly dream and the audience just showed up unexpectedly. The Kentucky alt-country/ indefinable group played several brand new songs from their highly-anticipated, forthcoming album, Evil Urges and most of the hits from their phenomenal breakthrough, Z. It was nearly two hours of flashing lights, wall-rattling rock n’ roll and more dancing white people than you’ve ever seen. (more…)

N.E.R.D. 1

When you go to see the hottest production duo of the last 10 years perform with their funk rock band you have a lot of expectations. You expect to see Rock Stars, you expect you’ll Want to Move, you might even expect a Lap Dance or two. But circumstance is a bitch. (more…)

Santogold 1e

By Natalia Ciolko

Oh, Santi. You’re so easy to love, with your baggy tank top and crazy dancers. (I almost expected that horse from the L.E.S. Artistes video to come onstage.) Santogold’s performance at Stubb’s Friday night was definitely a nice bone to throw to the rabid press who are chomping at the bit to see what she does next.

We had to be in the house for the most buzzed-about band in the blogosphere. Ezra Koenig and the Vampire Weekend guys packed Antone’s Friday night and didn’t disappoint. The guys are Columbia grads and wear perennial frat garb and I would’ve been critical of bassist Chris Baio for wearing a sweater in the Texas heat, but he took it off before they started playing. Dizzee 1

Great Britain’s greatest rapper swung by the “Bat Bar” at the Austin Convention Center for a free live set. Definitive Jux is finally bringing Rascal’s latest album, Maths + English stateside this April, after being released in mid ’07 in the UK. Dizzee opened by introducing some stock rappers from his Dirtee Stank label, but most of them were easily forgotten after a few less-than-impressive performances. (more…)
