N.E.R.D. 1

When you go to see the hottest production duo of the last 10 years perform with their funk rock band you have a lot of expectations. You expect to see Rock Stars, you expect you’ll Want to Move, you might even expect a Lap Dance or two. But circumstance is a bitch.

N.E.R.D. 2

N.E.R.D’s show, as potentially exciting as it was, was plagued by the band’s tardiness and the audience’s sophomoric behavior. Things started off bad when the band showed up over 30 minutes behind schedule, an eternity in SXSW time. There were so many stage hands twerking things on stage for so long, I wasn’t sure if I was going to see N.E.R.D. or The Rolling Stones. Then there were the fans.  Most of the people in the audience were drunk, rowdy, wannabe rock stars, which, in hindsight, I probably should have expected. Much beer was spilled and many elbows were thrown. One guy on stage upped the dueche bag ante by taking off a Hot 93.3 shirt, exposing his man boobs and waving it around for the duration of the show. At one point, Pharell had to tell him to give him some space.

N.E.R.D. 3

Since Chad and Pharell have taken up playing their own instruments, I was a little disappointed to see that neither of them would be playing live. Pharell seemed dedicated to his front man duties, but Chad looked really underutilized standing behind his little console, and frequently walked around on stage. Energy levels were high, and some of the new songs sounded great, but I left Stubb’s feeling less than satisfied. Hopefully Things Found, out later this year, will hit harder.

1. More SXSW: My Morning Jacket « Burnt Orange Juice - March 17, 2008

[…] The band left the stage after about an hour and a half of criss-crossing their catalog, but a cheering crowd was having none of it and they still hadn’t played “Lay Low.”All five band members re-emerged firing on all pistons and the music was so loud that those of us in the front of the packed music hall were a little disoriented. The brightly colored lights contributed to an other-worldly atmosphere that took the experience to a new level. There was a collective feeling in the audience that we had all just experienced the kind of thorough rocking that comes along only once in a generation. N.E.R.D. should take notes. […]
