Clipse 2

Thursday March 13, the Clipse lit up the afternoon on the free stage at the Mohawk. The cold beer was flowing and the acts, all heavy hitters like No Age and Sons & Daughters, were all moving smooth on time. The Clipse took the stage at almost exactly 4:45, came out looking like the personification of hustla yin-and-yang: Pusha T in all black, Malice in White with a gold chain to knock you out with. (I’ll post the photo.) The crowd was incredibly hype from the beginning, and the Clipse took it zero to sixty. You could really feel them feeding off the energy the people were giving, and they gave it right back. (more…)

Cool Kids 1

I’m not usually given to hyperbole, but I think its safe to say that The Cool Kids are pretty much the flyest act on the planet right now. Step your game up. I headed over to the Gorilla Vs. Bear party at The Peacock in East Austin for a show that turned out to be memorable for more reasons than one. (more…)

The Gorilla vs. Booze party was at the Peacock, an east 6th venue with a nice turquoise décor theme and a tiny ballroom for the cramming of bodies. As mortals are doomed to err, the 2:30 Ghosthustler performance didn’t take off until near 4 p.m. The band was plagued with technical difficulties both before and during the performance but the lead singer seemed to be having no technical difficulty in leading his one-man army of booty shake. Video would not kill this radio star, ladies, he’s pretty foxy but he doesn’t look old enough to be legal. Ghosthustler’s unglamorous Denton roots are thoroughly shed by their convincing moog wizardry and sly facial hair, but I think this group still has some tightening up to do before we can call them fully baked. Or is it BeckMouse?

Either way, in case you haven’t heard, 2008 is the year of Brian Joseph Burton, a.k.a. insane genius / anti-super producer, Danger Mouse. Having already produced Ohio-blues-rockers The Black Keys’ first-ever produced album, and wrapped up the seizure-inducing sophomore LP for his dynamic duo, Gnarls Barkley, Danger’s been confirmed as the button-pusher for Beck’s forthcoming album. If their union turns out to be anywhere near as seizure-inducing as it should be, then sign us up for the shake-up.

Danger’s also slated to produce a posthumous album from the late Ike Turner and reunite with MF Doom this year. I guess mice never sleep.

<< Natalia Ciolko starts your spring break off right. >>

As much as I love old-school hip hop vids, I have to do something different today because it’s about to be SPRING BREAK and that is pretty intense. As soon as I woke up today this video popped into my head. This has been a wicked week and an uphill struggle so I think this massive party fight sums up the Friday feeling of release pretty well.

Being a Tokyo Police Club fan is like signing up to go sky-diving. You know you’re in for the thrill of your life, but first you have to get teased a little bit. Belly-flopping on to padded mats during training sessions is fun and all, but it really only whets the appetite. And when you finally reach your big day, the plane ride to 13,000 ft. is filled with angst and anticipation. << Get TPC’s new single, SXSW dates and more after the jump. (more…)

<< Colby White brings you the illest shit you never heard >>

Yeah, the video could’ve been better – a lot better – but I can’t deny Scanz. His debut Prelude to a Legacy makes the con game that was the Rawkus 50 worth it. (My beef with Rawkus is another post in itself.) Scanz should’ve picked a different track as the lead single, maybe one with a better hook, but “Don’t Front” is more than a solid showcase for
his complicatedly flawless flow. Don’t believe? Check “You Know the Deal” below.

The new video from Justice is a visual feast created by graphic genius, and previous director of Kanye’s “Good Life” and the French house duo’s 2007 smash “D.A.N.C.E., So-Me.

The logos are recognizable, but does anyone know what this song is about?

The Washington D.C. rapper Wale (pronounced “wah-lay”) has been making waves in the hip-hop community with support from Mark Ronson and various “artists to watch” lists. See the Peels section for details on his upcoming “Mixtape about nothing” inspired by that famous show covering similar subject matter. Wale’s newest joint is a banger to be certain and is produced by his frequent collaborator and fellow up-and-comer, Best Kept Secret, with a guest verse from the sole remaining survivor of Houston’s legendary U.G.K., Bun B.
